R.I.P. Broadcast's Trish Keenan
Terrible news. After reports that Broadcast singer was seriously ill, today Warp released a statement saying she passed away this morning at 9am from complications with pneumonia after two weeks in intensive care.
Broadcast’s Tender Buttons remains one of my favourite albums of all time.

Bibio - Mind Bokeh album sampler
Exciting news: As a big fan of Bibio’s last album Ambivalence Avenue, word reaches that Warp will release a followup on April 4th internationally. A brief album sampler is above but Warp is calling it “the night-time counterpart to Ambivalence Avenue’s more pastoral, sunflecked tones”.
It can be pre-ordered here on digitally, on CD and limited double vinyl. Tracklisting...

Ones To Watch 2011 - MOTHS
The definition of one to watch is an artist who is clearly adept at making music and impressing but maybe hasn’t gone as far as the album making cycle. MOTHS aka Jack Colleran has a good excuse. He’s 17 and still in school in my hometown of Newbridge, Kildare but he’s already made a couple of standout electronic jams. Definitely keep an eye out for more of this goodness. And...

Stream the Caribbean/African sound of Aurelio
I spent the morning listening to two of Subpop’s recent releases. Daniel Martin Moore’s family gospel album and this lovely little release from Honduras man Aurelio Martinez. On bleak January days like this, it’s a no-brainer to stick on something that was made far far away, like the Caribbean as this album was. The album contains Garifuna rhythms and like his people,...

Today is the 5th anniversary of the Dubstep Warz...
Your night-time listening for tonight is the Dubstep Warz legendary Breezeblock which debuted on Mary Anne Hobbs BBC Radio One show five years ago today. Dubstep Warz was the dubstep mix which got me into the genre in the first place. It had the excitement of a new scene all over it, tunes like I had never heard before and seminal mixing contributions from Skream, Kode9 and The Spaceape, Mala,...

Listen to Anna Calvi's debut album
Hotly tipped in recent months, Anna Calvi’s self-titled debut album is out on Friday January 14th through Domino and The Guardian got the stream of it which is now below. Her theatrical guitar-driven music impressed me at Other Voices last month. There’s a classical old-style movie night-club vibe to her music, her singing voice and her look that gives it a Mulholland Drive/ David...

Glasser - 'Mirrorage' (Lindstrøm remix)
Lindstrøm does his swirling disco thing on Glasser’s ‘Mirrorage’. Basically, an extended version of an already awesome song. Cameron Mesirow aka Glasser is on a European tour from late January and plays Crawdaddy in Dublin on February 24th, a show I’m very much looking forward to and you should be too.

New Starfucker album - Reptilians
Certainly my favourite band out of Portland, Oregon and one which I loved at SXSW 2009, Starfucker (STRKFR) are back with a new album Reptilians through Polyvinyl.
Starfucker’s music is bouncy, immediate electro indie-pop. It’s totally infectious. Here’s new tune ‘Bury Us Alive’ followed by a couple more older tunes. If you pre-order the album on 180-gram clear...

A regular roundup of 5 tunes that are getting repeated plays.
1. Mogwai - ‘Rano Pano’
The first song from forthcoming seventh studio album Hardcore Will Never Die, But You Will lives up to the band’s penchant ear-crunching atmospherics as big drums and distorted guitars pile into a bliss machine for just over 5 minutes. Download: Mogwai - Rano Pano

Introducing: Great Lakes Mystery
Gareth Averill has been a drummer with a good lot of bands in Dublin for a few years but 2011 sees him turn his attention to his own project Great Lakes Mystery. So with that in mind and after a full band’s debut performance at the Shock NYE party in the Twisted Pepper, Averill has debuted three tunes from GLM.
Sample the mix of brooding synths and sprightly electronica below. Look out...
